A New Hope: The Princess, The Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy

The Princess, The Scoundrel and the Farm Boy is a retelling of sorts of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

This retelling is split into three separate parts, the princess (Princess Leia), the scoundrel (Han Solo), and the Farm Boy (Luke Skywalker. This novel is defiantly aimed at more younger readers, but if you do enjoy Star Wars and want a easy read then it is just as enjoyable!

Each of the three different section of the novel give 1) a different angle on what occurred during the movie and 2) some extra scenes that are not in the movie!! And, since this book IS CANON, that means that they ‘actually’ happened! These extra scenes are quite nice, and flesh out each of the main characters more.

‘The Princess’ takes place from just before the Star Destroyer Devastator captures the Tantive IV until the Death Star destroys Alderaan. Since it is only from Princess Leia’s perspective, we find out exactly what happens from between her capture, her torture and her watching her home planet be destroyed.

‘The Scoundrel’ starts in the Mos Eisley cantina and continues until Luke, Han, Chewie, C3P0, R2D2 and Princess Leia have just boarded the Falcon inside the Death Star. Bracken defiantly gave Han a lot more likeable characteristics, whilst also managing to keep him true to himself. Also, we get to see why Han is so skeptical about the force as we see Ben teaching Luke about the force through a non-force sensitives eyes and thoughts.

‘The Farm Boy’ picks up where ‘The Scoundrel’ left off up until the medal ceremony at the end of the movie. Bracken defiantly helped expand of Luke Skywalkers and Biggs Darklighters friendship that you can only find out about in deleted scenes.

To say that I enjoyed The Princess, The Scoundrel, And The Farm Boy is an understatement. Any Star Wars fan is sure to enjoy this book.

  1. Another good retelling of the Star Wars movies is William Shakespeare’s Star Wars. They’re more of a comedic retelling, but they’re great, and they have the first 6 movies at least. You’ve got “The Empire Striketh Back”, “Tragedy of Sith’s Revenge: Star Wars Part The Third” and of course, “The Jedi Doth Return”.

    I bought this a week after I saw The Force Awakens on impulse (and have been steadily collecting the new canon since) and I absolutely loved it! I read it all in one sitting! I thought the characterization was spot on. I already loved Bracken (The Darkest Minds books are one of my favorite series! Have you read them?) and this just solidified my trust that she can do no wrong. You’re right that it’s target demographic is on the younger side, but it will be a satisfying read for any Star Wars fan looking to get into the new canon! (Have you checked out any of the new comics yet? They are amazing, just saying.)

      I have not read The Darkest Minds trilogy yet, but after reading this and Passenger it has been moved up my TBR 🙂I am loving the new canon (apart from Aftermath but you cannot expect everything to be perfect) I do need to get to the comics, but we don’t have a comic book seller where I live and my library’s choice in comics / graphic novels is very limited (I am going to become very aquatinted with Stephan King and The Walking Dead) and honestly I feel like comics / graphic novels should be read in physical form so I will not be purchasing digital copies. I can read novels on my kindle / iPad but with comics I just can’t get into them

        I actually got a lot of the comics from Books-A-Million. It’s the only real books store in my small town and after Force Awakens came out they set up an entire Star Wars corner of the store. It’s amazing! How’d you like Passenger? I haven’t read it yet.

        Yeah, pretty much my entire town got into the new Star Wars craze. I’ll definitely check out your review! The book’s cover is so aesthetically pleasing and I almost bought it just because of that a couple days ago.
