The Empire Strikes Back: So You Want To Be A Jedi?
By Adam Gidwitz
So You Want To Be A Jedi? is a retelling of The Empire Strikes Back. Check out my review of the retelling of A New Hope here.
Gidwitz had a good idea on how to do a retelling of The Empire Strikes Back, but it was poorly executed.
Gidwitz wrote So You Want To Be A Jedi? in second person, and I can understand why, but he failed miserably at it. Essentially, Gidwitz wants to reader to feel like they are Luke Skywalker and trying to become a Jedi, and since this is aimed at younger readers (like Alexandra Bracken’s The Princess, The Scoundrel and The Farm Boy), I can understand them wanting to be like Luke Skywalker and become a Jedi. Gidwitz best writing was when Luke was not around, so it had to be told in third person, but even that was not great.
The only things that I enjoyed about So You Want To Be A Jedi? was the ‘challenges’ at the end of each chapter. essentially they are just meditation guides but it was interesting to see how to begin meditation (especially for the younger readers) and how it may help them be calmer because then they will be a Jedi!
I would say that this is defiantly more a kids books, and it should stay that way.
