Hello everyone and welcome to another Top 5 Wednesday. This weeks top 5 is your top 5 angsty romance.
At first I was confused as to what this topic actually meant, but fortunately Samantha provided an explanation.
Talk about your favorite ships that have a healthy side of angst. (definition: adj.: describes a situation or literary piece which contains dark, depressing, angry, and/or brooding emotions from the participating characters.)
So to say that this made me give a sigh of relief is an understatement. I do not read romance books. I do not particularly enjoy romance and I have read too many books where it seemed forced. But fortunately I do have a few romances that fit this category. I won’t be limiting myself to novels as I just do not have many romances that I enjoy from them.
These may be semi-spoliery if you do not know about these characters.
- Batman and Catwoman
Whether it is in the comic books or in the movies, Batman is always trying to get Catwoman to give up her ways of thievery. I am not sure if you would think of it as angsty, but in how I view their relationship it comes from a very dark place. Batman is probably a combination of dark, depressed, angry and brooding; and rightfully so.
- Superman / Clark Kent and Lois Lane
Mainly from the DCEU, but it is semi there in the comics; Lois Lanes puts up with a lot of stuff that Superman does. Even though he is practically invincible, she still worries about him coming home safely. Again, I am not sure if you would call it angsty but especially with how Superman is portrayed in Man Of Steel, he is constantly doubting himself and if he is making the right choices. So I would say more brooding than dark or angry,
- Aquaman and Mera
This one is one that I was recently exposed to from reading Aquaman Volume 1: The Drowning (click here for my review). Aquaman has grown tremendously since his inception, not that many people will give him a chance. Again, like Superman it is mainly from the DCEU but it is still there in the comics; Aquaman is the King of Atlantis and that must be a heavy burden. Aquaman is probably the most angry, and that is mainly because he is an outside to both humans and Atlantans.
- Joker and Harley Quinn
This is probably the best example of what not to have in a relationship. The Joker and Harley Quinn are completely mental and if they are not the definition of an angsty relationship then I have completely the wrong idea, which I probably do. Both characters are very dark, even though they seem very light and making jokes. The past makes them who they are and what both of them have gone through, I think anyone would go insane. The Joker is probably more brooding whilst Harley Quinn is more dark and angry.
- Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase
Yes, I do have one that is not from the DC Comics universe! Whilst not as dark or depressing as my other choices for this top 5, being the son of Poseidon and daughter of Athena does have its drawbacks. I would mainly say that the constant saving the world whilst whilst being chased my monsters while their parents and the other gods do not help would lead to some underlying resentment and anger to them as they are the ones that generally cause it.
